Come and see! (John 1:39) This is the abiding invitation of the Church in her liturgical services. Come with faith and you will be numbered with those to whom "it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 13:11). You will be found with those to whom insight has been granted into "the mystery of Christ" which is "the mystery hidden for ages in God, Who created all things," which is now made manifest "through the Church" even to the angels (Ephesians 3:4, 9-10).

Scripture in the Divine Liturgy
Ever wondered what the Liturgy is made up of? Glad you asked. Here is what Fr John Matusiak compiled a few decades ago. It turns out the Liturgy is completely based on the Bible. Who would have thought it?
What is biblical about our worship? Well, everything!
This list is not exhaustive, of course, but illustrates very well how our worship is not made up out the “thin air,” but is actually based on something specific.
Opening Doxology – Blessed in the Kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Mark 11:10 – “Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hosanna in the highest!”
Luke 22:29-30 – “I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Matthew 28:19 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Revelation 7:12 – “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.”
The Great Litany – In peace, let us pray to the Lord!
Philippians 4:6-7 – “Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Psalm 51:1 – “Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.”
Luke 18:13 – “But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’”
John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
1 Timothy 2:1-2 – “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way.”
Hebrews 13:7 – “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith.”
Psalm 109:26 – “Help me, O Lord my God! Save me according to Your steadfast love.”
Luke 1:42 – “and she exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!’”
The First Antiphon – “Bless the Lord, O my soul”
Selected verses from Psalm 103.
The Second Antiphon – “Praise the Lord, O my soul”
Psalm 146.
The Hymn to Christ Incarnate – “Only-begotten Son…”
John 1:1, 3:16, 17:5, 19:18 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life… and now, Father, glorify thou me in thy own presence with the glory which I had with thee before the world was made… There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.”
Luke 1:35 – “And the angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.’”
Hebrews 2:14 – “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil.”
Matthew 8:25 – “And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Save, Lord; we are perishing.’”
The Third Antiphon – The Beatitudes
Matthew 5:3-12 - Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.
The Little Entrance – “Come let us worship…”
Psalm 95:1-6 - O come, let us sing to the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving, let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In His hand are the depths of the earth, the heights of the mountains are His also. The sea is His, for He made it, for His hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
Revelation 7:11-12 - And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.
The Trisagion – “Holy God, Holy Mighty…”
Isaiah 6:1-5 - In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim, each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of his glory.” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips, for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Selected verses from different Psalms.

He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication, and He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.” Once more they cried, “Alleluia! The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.” And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who is seated on the throne, saying, “Amen. Alleluia!” And from the throne came a voice crying, “Praise our God, all you His servants, you who fear Him, small and great.” Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderings, crying, “Alleluia! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.”

The Concluding Eucharistic Prayers
2 Maccabees 12:44-45 - For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead. But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.
1 Timothy 2:1-2 - First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way.

The Litany before the Lord’s Prayer
Ephesians 5:2 - And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
1 Peter 3:15 - But in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence.
2 Corinthians 5:10 - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body.
Ephesians 4:13 - Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
Philippians 2:1-2 - So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
The Lord’s Prayer
Matthew 6:9-13 - Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
2 Corinthians 2:9-11 - For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything. Any one whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, to keep Satan from gaining the advantage over us; for we are not ignorant of his designs.

The Eucharist
1 Corinthians 11:27-29 - Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.
1 Timothy 1:15 - The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the foremost of sinners.

John 6:32-35, 48-58 - Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world.” They said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”… I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever, and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is My flesh.” The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. He who eats my flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
2 Timothy 2:15 - Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
