Sunday Gospel lesson:
THE LORD TOLD THIS PARABLE, “The Kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents (one talent was worth more than fifteen years’ wages of a laborer) was brought to him. And, as he could not pay, his master ordered the servant to be sold, together with his wife and children, and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the servant fell down on his knees before the king, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay you everything.’ And moved with compassion for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii (one denarius was the usual day’s wage for a laborer), and grabbing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay me what you owe.’ Then his fellow servant fell down and begged him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay you.’ But he refused. Then he went and threw him into prison, until he would pay the debt. When his other fellow servants saw what had happened, they were very distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not have had mercy also on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. So My heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive each other their trespasses from your heart.”
And for the Dormition of the Mother of God:
IN THOSE DAYS, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to His word. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, so she came to Jesus, and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve by myself? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled by many things. But there is only one thing needed, and Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.” While He was saying this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that gave birth to You and the breasts that nursed You.” But He said, “Yes, and more than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”
Saint John Chrysostom says that there are different degrees of sin: one against God, and the other against fellow human beings,
Do you see how great a difference there is between sins against humanity and sins against God? As much a difference as between ten thousand talents and a hundred denarii. No, much greater in fact. This comes about from the difference of the persons and from the frequency of the sins. For when someone is watching, we hold off and do not dare to sin. But God is watching all the time, and yet we are not afraid. In fact, we even say and do everything quite brazenly.
