Resurrectional Epistle reading
BROTHERS and SISTERS, walk as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is found in all that is good and right and true. Discern what is well pleasing to the Lord. Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them for what they are. It is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly. But everything is revealed when it is exposed by the light, for everything made visible is light. Therefore, it is said, “Sleeper, awake! Arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Be careful then how you live, not as fools, but as wise people, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and chanting to the Lord in your hearts.
Epistle reading for the Feast of Saint Nicholas
BROTHERS and SISTERS, obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls and will give an account. This way, they will be able to do this with joy and not with grief because that would not be profitable for you. Pray for us: we trust that we have a good conscience, desiring to live honorably in all things. I strongly urge you to pray for this: that I may be restored to you sooner. Now may the God of peace, Who with the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, make you complete in every good work so that you may do His will, working in you what is well-pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to Whom be the glory unto ages of ages. Amen.
Saint John Chrysostom, commenting on the first reading, says,
Paul said, "Walk as children of light." Now, the light reproves by exposing the things which take place in the darkness. So that if you are virtuous, and conspicuous, the wicked will be unable to lie hidden. For just as when a candle is set, all are brought to light, and the thief cannot enter, so if your light shines, the wicked being discovered will be caught. So then it is our duty to expose the wicked [by the light of our virtues].
